World Diabetes Day

Today is World Diabetes Day, established in 1991 by WHO and the International Diabetes Federation to mark the birthday of Frederick Banting, who helped with the discovery of insulin.  Taking place during National Diabetes Month, the day is intended to bring awareness to the global impact of diabetes.  This year’s theme is “Healthy Living and Diabetes”, chosen to encourage people to live healthy in order to prevent or help control diabetes.  There are an estimated 387 million people living with diabetes worldwide, about 1 out of 12 people.  Although diabetes is often associated with developed countries and affluent lifestyles, diabetes is increasingly becoming an issue all over the world.
