You may have the flu if you have at least some of the following symptoms:
- fever
- cough
- sore throat
- nasal congestion
- fatigue
- headache
- body aches and pains
- chills
Many of these symptoms can also be seen with a cold, which is a more mild respiratory illness than the flu. Although the symptoms are similar for both the flu and cold, those with the flu may have more severe symptoms for a longer period of time. One way to tell if you have the flu is to check your temperature. It is more likely that you have the flu with a high fever.
Treatment options for the flu include antiviral drugs. If your flu symptoms began within the past 48 hours then you may qualify for a flu treatment study. Click here to learn more.
It is important for people who are sick with the flu to stay home. If you have the flu then you should stay home until your fever has been gone for at least 24 hours, without the use of a fever reducing medication such as Tylenol. If you are in contact with others while you are sick then use a face mask and wash your hands often.
