Gardasil 9, a new HPV vaccine, was approved by the FDA today. The vaccine now protects against nine types of HPV, which includes five new strains in additional to the original four. The five new strains will boost the amount of protection the vaccine may provide to around 90% of HPV strains. Originally Gardasil protected against 70% of strains that cause cervical cancers. The new vaccine has been approved for the prevention of cervical, vulvar, vaginal, and anal cancers, as well as genital warts. Gardasil is recommended for both boys age 9 to 15 and girls age 9 to 26. Approximately 75 to 80% of men and women are infected with HPV during their lifetime.
Thank you to our patients who participated in the study that helped get this vaccine approved!
