There are many misconceptions out there about clinical research. Many people think that they will be treated as guinea pigs or receive substandard care. Neither of these are true, and the same goes for the myths that the Alzheimer’s Association has addressed at their research center. These myths can be applied to clinical trials for all types of conditions and medications. Some of the myths listed include:
- There are already plenty of volunteers
- False – many more volunteers are needed for clinical trials, and many drug approvals are delayed because of a lack of participants in clinical trials
- My doctor will let me know about clinical trials that I may qualify for
- False – doctors are not always aware of currently enrolling clinical trials. You can find clinical trials in your area by searching on CenterWatch’s Listings
- It costs too much to participate
- False – Although all trials are designed differently, many will reimburse for travel expenses and compensate patients for their time
