Flu season is here and now is the time to learn about how you can protect yourself from getting sick. The best way to protect yourself against the flu is to prevent it by getting a flu shot. If your kids haven’t been vaccinated yet you may be interested in a flu vaccine research study for those 6 months to 5 years of age. Although the flu shot may prevent you from getting sick it isn’t 100% effective. You can also help to protect yourself from the flu by:
- washing your hands frequently
- avoiding close contact with those who are sick
- cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze
- staying healthy (exercise, eat healthy and get enough sleep)
If you do get the flu we have upcoming research studies for flu treatment. You may have the flu if you are experiencing the following symptoms:
- Fever of at least 100.4°F
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Headache
- Nasal congestion
- Body aches and pains
- Chills and fatigue
Some people may have a mild case of the flu, and not require medicine, while others may have more severe symptoms and need treatment. Seniors, young children, and people with chronic health conditions are at a higher risk for complications from the flu. Those who require medical attention should do so as soon as possible since flu treatments work better the sooner they are taken.
