There have been 154 measles cases in the United States this year. Most of the cases are linked to the measles outbreak tracing back to Disneyland. The outbreak has reached 17 states, including Utah. The majority of cases have occurred in California, with 104 out of the reported 154, and only 2 have been from Utah. Measles can cause serious complications, especially in young children. About 1 in 4 who get measles in the U.S. will be hospitalized and 1 or 2 out of 1,000 will die from measles.
The CDC reports that the majority of people who got measles this year were unvaccinated. Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself and others against measles. The measles/mumps/rubella vaccine is given in two doses, one at 12 to 15 months of age and another at 4 to 6 years. One dose is about 93% effective at preventing measles and two doses are 97% effective.
We are currently enrolling patients 12 to 15 months of age for an MMR vaccine research study. Click here or call us at 801-486-3021 and ask for Research to learn more.
