Shingles is a viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus that also causes chickenpox. People who had chickenpox as children may get shingles as an adult. Early signs of shingles include burning or shooting pain and tingling or itching that will appear in one area on a single side of the body. The tingling sensation may appear days before the rash begins to develop. For shingles treatment to be most effective, it must be started within 72 hours of the onset of symptoms.
We are currently enrolling for a research study of shingles pain. Please call FirstMed East at 801-733-4057 to learn more about this study.
Although there is no cure for shingles, there is a vaccine that may help prevent shingles or lessen its effects. The vaccine is recommended for people age 60 and over. We have an upcoming research study at Foothill Family Clinic South for a shingles vaccine. Click here to contact us to learn more about this study.
